I have made a lot of work for headphones. Sometimes as a compromise due to multiple sound works having to coexist in the same space, but often as a creative choice. I enjoy the intimacy of headphone listening, and enjoy using it as a space to tell stories, and also to encourage interaction from the listener, perhaps to move, to speak, or to engage with other listeners.
I co-initiated the Sonic Trails headphone series with the Tate Families and Early Years department. We commissioned four artists to make headphone works that engaged with the space of the Tate Modern, its visitors, and its artworks. The project has since worked with over twenty artists and I have made two works for the series, Adrift and This Is My Garden In The Morning. Artists include Jez Riley French, Ain Bailey, Tess Denman-Cleaver and Neil Luck.
